Memorial Day Book Review: O to be Like Thee: How Deep Love Runs by Kassie Angle

Happy Memorial Day, Arrowheads! Today I have a special book review in honor of Memorial Day, the day we honor the fallen soldiers who fought for our freedom. The book I’ll be reviewing, O to be Like Thee, is the perfect fit for Memorial Day, as it chronicles the deployments of a soldier who has lost his best friend on the warfront.

Highlights:

Portrayal of Soldiers on and off Duty

The author of this book, Kassie Angle, does a superb job providing realistic depictions of soldiers’ everyday lives both stateside and during deployment. I enjoyed watching the main character, Corey, transition between life as a soldier and civilian but always keeping his medic’s heart on his sleeve. Many people, myself included, often forget that men and women in uniform have their own struggles and family, and that they each are making sacrifices to provide safety and freedom for our country. This novel goes behind-the-scenes and depicts just what these soldiers are sacrificing.

Faith Content

Going along with the previous section, the faith content featured is something that I feel will be beneficial for all soldiers to read. The novel focuses on how God can heal us after losing someone in war, how to forgive our enemies even if they show no remorse, and how God allows us to go through strenuous circumstances to teach us to rely on Him fully.

Overall Message

The overall message of this book is my favorite aspect, as it asks us to not forget about those who have gave their lives for our freedom. The story the author uses to manifest this message pulls at the heartstrings and will serve as a permanent reminder for me that Memorial Day is not just a day we get off of work/school to grill hamburgers, but a day to memorialize those who have sacrificed their lives to the rest of us can enjoy the freedoms we often take for granted.

Lowlights:

Pacing:

The plot focuses on the day-to-day life of Lieutenant Corey Schreiber over the course of four years in the army, so at times there isn’t a whole lot of action taking place. There were a few scenes, such as when the family goes to the flower field, that I felt didn’t drive the plot forward. Other than this small factor, I highly enjoyed this unique story.

Rating:

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Thank you to the author for providing me a free ebook copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. A positive review was not required to receive the ebook.

As an author and blogger, my goal is to teach writers that there is a way to write realistic, thought-provoking, redemptive Christian fiction that honors God while not sugarcoating the realities of the world.
