“You’re Doing it Wrong!” …But Are You Really?

Over the past couple months, I’ve come to realize something about myself: I have opinions. Strong opinions. And while I am free to have them and speak and/or post about them, people are going to go out of their way to inform me of how wrong they think I am in not-so-nice ways.

Though my friend Penny’s post inspired me to write this post, I haven’t dealt with a lot of rude comments from online audiences (recently); this post is more or less the result of people I know personally continually trying to make me out to be the bad guy because I have differing opinions.

You'reDoingItWrong

“You’re Doing it Wrong!”

If I had a dollar for every time I’ve been reprimanded for doing or thinking about something “the wrong way”, I’d have more money than Jeff Bezos. Let me throw down a cold, hard truth: No one on this planet is the “ultimate authority” on anything. No one is perfect. No one knows everything. Only God has those aspects covered.

But, I’m not here to bash people, just their reactions.

I’ve never really understood why people feel the need to trash someone’s beliefs or methods of doing things either to their faces or via the “opposing party’s” own post. Not only is it incredibly rude, but it shows their arrogance.

Yeah, J.K. Rowling isn’t the “all-knowing goddess of writing”. That’s a matter of opinion any way you look at it. I mean, even the title of “Sexiest Man Alive” changes yearly, despite the ones from the past years still being alive. And does everyone on the planet agree with the final choice each year? Um, heck no. XD

Where was I going with this? Oh, yeah.

They’re not perfect, so their opinions aren’t either. They may think they are, but they’re not. And they’re wrong for telling you that your opinions are inferior to theirs.

If you can solve an equation correctly one way, don’t listen to that teacher who gets in an uproar because you didn’t do it her way. I mean, the dang problem still gets solved either way.

…Because, Are You Really Doing it Wrong?

When I was in third grade, we began the unit on cursive writing. My teacher’s assistant at the time repeatedly told my parents I hold my pencil “the wrong way” and that it negatively affected my handwriting. But out of my graduating class, guess who the only published author is? Who still holds her pencils “incorrectly” and writes primarily by hand, by the way. I rest my case.

Just because someone thinks your methods are wrong, it doesn’t mean they’re right.

And it doesn’t mean you’re wrong. Think as uniquely as God made you to think. God didn’t create you to think and act like everyone else. He made you to fulfill your own, individual, specific purposes that He has for you. Don’t let ANYONE take that away from you.

If you’re not harming anyone or dishonoring God (if you’re a Christian) with your opinions or methods, then have at it. Even if your ways are backed up by the soundest of reasoning, there will be some dingbat out there with something negative to say about it. But, you don’t have to listen to them.

P.S. If they try, just tell them, “Mind your peepers!” or “You ain’t my momma!” Unless they are your Momma. Then, you probably don’t need to say that. 😛

As an author and blogger, my goal is to teach writers that there is a way to write realistic, thought-provoking, redemptive Christian fiction that honors God while not sugarcoating the realities of the world.

  1. We always say, “only dead fish go with the flow!” Seriously, though, if everyone likes what you’re doing, that’s what probably means you’re really doing something wrong. There’s always going to be someone who says homeschooling or my dad being in the Army or you-name-it is wrong. (Speaking of which, I’ve always held my pencil wrong and it shows in my fourth finger, but being homeschooled I’ve never had to worry about that…I love my “misshapen” writer’s finger, and I think I have decent handwriting. 😆) If I think about it, though, tbh I can’t think of something people specifically tell me I’m doing wrong. 👍 I either totally brush it off or I’m just not approachable…blessing and a curse, I guess!! 😂

  2. SO TRUE. 😭 I’m still trying to remember this. That we don’t have to please everyone. Because we’d probably go crazy. 😂
Other people aren’t being so great about accepting other opinions, are they? My mind is blown away every day at how angry people get with me over literally nothing??
Thanks for this article. More people really need to read this. ❤️
