Good afternoon, Arrowheads! In every reader’s life, they come across that First Great Novel, the one book that, at the beginning of their reading history, completely enthralled them and leaves them searching for another like it. For me, ladies and gentlemen, my First Great Novel was A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks.
Book Review: A Walk to Remember
So, what made me fall in love with this critically acclaimed and film-adapted novel? Well, here are the top-three reasons why this was the first novel to bring me back to bookworm status:
The Christian themes:
A Walk to Remember holds a special place in my heart due to its excellent mix of both contemporary young adult and Christian fiction. The dialogue and narration are realistic, while not overly vulgar (though there are cuss words). Every time I reread it (which has been what, like 4 times now?) the transformation of Landon’s personality from a brooding, disrespectful teen to that of a godly man warms my heart. Then there’s Jamie Sullivan-a character I’ve always wanted to be like. Her relationship with God is admirable, and every time I read this novel, I want to be more like her.
Jamie and Landon’s relationship:
This brings me to my second favorite aspect of A Walk Remember: The epic love story! Compared to other Nicholas Sparks novels, I feel that the relationship that blossoms between Jamie and Landon is the most significant, as Landon becomes a believer in Christ and stays that way long after Jamie’s death. Additionally, he doesn’t move on and pursue other women; he married Jamie, yet took their relationship to mean longer than “to death do us part”. I absolutely ADORE that. Gah, it’s beautiful. ❤
The 1950s setting:
As if the novel couldn’t get more adorable, Mr. Sparks had to make the setting 1950s Beaufort, NC. I’m a native to eastern North Carolina, so the setting resonates with me already, but I’ve also always loved the vibe from the 1950s. Add these elements together, and it’s a sweet, classic southern romance that’ll make you swoon for years to come.
So, there we have it! With all of these elements combined, how could I not fall in love with this novel? I hope you guys enjoy it as well!
Thanks for reading, and be sure to check back here on Wednesdays and Fridays for more Authoring Arrowheads posts!
