Good afternoon, Arrowheads! I’ve got another review for a Jes Drew book today, this time for her historical fiction fantasy novella, Wolf Claw. So, let’s get started!
Though I’m not usually a fan of monsters or mythical creatures (vampires, fairies, mermaids, etc.), I wanted to give Wolf Claw a try, as it’s by one of my favorite indie Christian authors. I’m happy to say that I’m glad I read this book, as it provided a refreshing take on mythical creatures while tying in aspects of Christianity.
Though the first installment of the Howling Twenties series is a shorter read, it still allots time for the characters’ personalities to shine through. My favorite character ended up being Amos Hood, a vampire and werewolf hunter who aids the main character, Jane, on her journey. This is partly because his cousin nicknames him Robin Hood (<3) but anyway. 😀
At one point, the characters have a conversation where they analyze different types of fairy tales and legends, and someone brought up that the legend of Robin Hood is similar to the story of King David in the Bible and I just *fangirls*! Gah, those are two of my favorites and I loved how this conversation was brought to the readers’ attention.
The Faith Element:
In order to escape the wrath of the werewolf at night, the characters often take refuge in churches, as they deter werewolves and vampires like silver does. I really liked that the author included this element, as its a simple explanation of how God shields and protects us from the darkness of the world; that faith in Him is our refuge and that we need not be afraid when we abide in Him.
“…innocence and wisdom is the only way for sheep to survive in a world of wolves.”
The final scene felt sort of rushed, but I understand the reason for it is due to the series continuing. It wasn’t enough of a drawback to warrant a decreased star rating.
Despite this not being my typical genre of choice, Wolf Claw is an enchanting read that makes me want to find out the fate of Jane Delane in the rest of the series.
Thank you to the author for providing me a free ebook copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. A positive review was not required to receive the ebook.
