It’s that time of year again, y’all!
If you have a writer in your life, and you’re far from being a writer yourself, you may struggle to come up with gift ideas for them. But, have no fear! Here’s a list of 10 gift ideas for writers, curated by a writer. 🙂

Note: I am not an affiliate of any of the brands/products that I recommend in this post, and therefore receive no commission if you buy anything from these links. I am just genuinely trying to help people find gifts for the writer in their life, because I know it can be difficult. 😛
1 | Writing Craft or Plotting Books
Be sure to snoop around your writer’s bookshelf before making these purchases, in case they already own them, but writing craft and/or plotting books are books that many writers love to have on hand. My personal favorite is Save the Cat! Writes a Novel by Jessica Brody.
2 | Pens
You can’t go wrong with buying a writer a good set of pens! There are tons of options on Amazon, from wooden pens that have the option for a name to be engraved on the side, to pens that match certain aesthetics that could compliment your writer’s desk setup. My personal favorites aren’t fancy, but I use them daily and they’re a solid contender: Blue BIC Round Stic pens.
3 | Writing T-Shirts
My husband recently bought me a writer T-shirt for our wedding anniversary, and as a T-shirt hoarder, I love it! There are dozens of writing related T-shirts online, with Amazon and Redbubble having many options to choose from.
4 | A Typewriter or Typing Device
If you’re wanting to go with a more expensive gift, you could either go the old fashioned route with a typewriter (which can be found at thrift stores, or some online sellers), or, if your writer is tech savvy, with a Bluetooth keyboard for their phone, so they can write on-the-go. There are many different options available, but the link is for the current Amazon Choice selection at the time of writing this post.
5 | Creative Writing Exercise Books or Games
If you’re wanting to get your writer’s creative juices flowing, there are plenty of options to choose from! Several years ago, my aunt gifted me some creative writing prompt books (available at Five Below and possibly other retailers), and Amazon has several games for writers, like these writing dice. I’ve never personally owned or used the writing dice, but they seem like a cool idea!
6 | Books
Like with the writing craft/plotting books, you may want to scope out the books your writer already owns before buying them more, but I can almost guarantee that your writer will be elated to receive a new book. If you can’t access their bookshelf, try seeing if they have a public Goodreads profile. That way, you can view the books they have on their Want to Read list and have a better chance of buying them something they don’t already own. 🙂
Pro Tip: If you’re not sure what book to buy them, figure out what their favorite book is and buy them a special edition copy, or a format they don’t already have the book in. A few years ago, my now-husband surprised me with a hardcover copy of my favorite book, which I previously only owned in a mass-market paperback, and it is one of my favorite gifts of all-time.
7 | A Do Not Disturb Sign
If your writer has a writing area that could use a little more privacy, a fun gift to give them could be a Do Not Disturb Sign. This is just one option; there are many different styles to choose from.
8 | Notebooks
Like with books, I promise you that the writer in your life will LOVE a new notebook. My personal favorite places to shop for notebooks are in person at Marshalls and Hobby Lobby, though websites like Amazon and Redbubble have tons of unique designs to choose from as well.
9 | Candles
Many writers love to light candles during their writing sessions, so candles could possibly be a hit!
Pro Tip: If you know that the writer in your life is sensitive to strong smells, proceed with caution. However, unscented candles could still be a viable option. I’m only adding this because some scented candles/wall plug-in fragrances make my nose stuff up, so I rarely light candles.
10 | Mugs
Tea and coffee are often the weakness of writers, so if you gift them a mug, they’ll most likely love you forever. For mugs, I’d personally skip online shopping and head out to somewhere like Marshalls, HomeGoods, or Hobby Lobby to see what you can find there, because you can often find bigger mugs for cheaper prices. Mugs don’t even have to be writing-related, but if you find one that has a bookish feel, you may score bonus points with your writer. However, if you do shop for mugs online, you can’t go wrong with one like this.
