It wasn’t until I started rereading all of the books in The Ballad of Emery Brooks trilogy in preparation for The Dream‘s release that I realized just how many Bible events relate to Emery’s journey. Here are some of the stories that came to mind during my rereads!

The Story of Job
Though the losses Emery experiences throughout the trilogy aren’t as magnified as those experienced by Job in the Bible, she does encounter multiple forms of loss in book one, The Crush. Events from the past also left her and her family with scars that could make them wary about trusting God, and His people, again. Nevertheless, like Job, Emery never gives up her faith in God completely.
Does she also end up with twice as much as she had before? You’ll have to read the books to find out. 🙂
The Story of Joseph
Since she was a little girl, Emery has loved music and has known she wants to do big things with her gift someday. Joseph had a God-given calling on his life as well, as God relayed to him through his dreams, but expressing the dreams brought hardship and abuse on Joseph from his brothers because they were jealous of him. Though Emery isn’t persecuted for pursuing her dream as badly as Joseph is in the Bible, she does face backlash from others that makes her wonder if her dream will ever become a reality.
The Story of Jonah
Like Jonah, who ended up being thrown overboard and then swallowed by a fish due to disobeying God’s command to go preach in Nineveh, Emery is stubborn to a fault. Though she has good intentions, she often defaults to going her own way rather than praying about her plans or asking God to lead, which creates more problems in her life. God is always faithful to lead her out of those messes when she finally realizes she needs to seek Him, and He teaches her valuable lessons along the way. Through these life lessons, God teaches her, like He taught Jonah, that His way is best and that God wants us to trust Him and be obedient to what He has called us to do.

Great list! Also, Emery’s ability to use music is kind of like Miriam singing after they crossed the Red Sea.
