WIP Update: Follow the Arrows (Update #3)

It’s safe to say my current WIP, Follow the Arrows, has had the slowest start of any book I’ve attempted to write since becoming an Indie author. It’s not the book’s fault, though. It’s mine. Life got super hectic during the last half of 2024, right around the time I tried to give this book its start, and the manuscript got set on the back-burner about a month and a half in. Now that The Dream is published and I’m seeking stillness in 2025, I’m praying I can finally spend some quality time with this work in progress and enjoy the writing experience. Let’s see what’s happened with Follow the Arrows since my last update!

January 2025: Easing Back into Writing

Just because it’s January and that often puts a fire under writers’ butts to get words on paper, it doesn’t mean I’m sitting on a flame yet.

What a weird way to introduce this section. XD It’s accurate though.

During the second week of January, I reread what I had previously written of Follow the Arrows to get reacquainted with the story. At just a little over 9,700 words, it only took me a couple lunch breaks to get through. Though I was wary about reading it, thinking it was going to be a load of nonsense, revisiting those few short chapters actually made me want to start writing again. And so, I have!

My first day back writing in 2025 was on January 9th. I only wrote 159 words that day, but I had fun. Not wanting to pressure myself, I’ve written between two to four hundred plus words during my handful of writing sessions this month, with the word count steadily increasing with each session. I’ve been uncharacteristically busy during the time I normally write throughout this month, making it harder to get writing sessions in, but I’m hoping my schedule will return to normal this week.

On January 10th, God allowed me to reach 10,000 words on the manuscript!

As of yesterday’s writing session (January 28th), Follow the Arrows is currently at 11,622 words!

Number of January writing sessions (as of January 28th… more may come!): 6

My goal for this month was to reach the 15,000 word mark by the 31st, but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to get that far over the next few days. That’s okay, though. I’d rather ease my way back into this book than take off running without taking the time to think about what I’m writing. ❤

Are you a slow and steady writer, or do you pen books at breakneck speed? Let me know in the comments!

Aim high, stay strong, and always hit your mark.

As an author and blogger, my goal is to teach writers that there is a way to write realistic, thought-provoking, redemptive Christian fiction that honors God while not sugarcoating the realities of the world.

  1. It seems like no matter how solid my ideas feel, I always take forever to just START writing. Then once it’s going—& time allows—I typically have the momentum of a freight tra

  2. Way to go! I’m so glad you’re having fun writing this book! I’ve learned that the law of inertia (the part about an object at rest remains at rest) applies to motivation, haha. Getting started is the mind game to overcome sometimes!
