Welcome back, Arrowheads!
Last week, I didn’t post because my husband and I were celebrating our 4th wedding anniversary with a vacation. This week, I thought it’d be the perfect opportunity to finally do this post that I’ve been brainstorming for a while: books I would recommend to my husband if he were to become a reader!
My husband is a man of many hobbies. He loves anything to do with motors (cars, trucks, lawn mowers, tractor pulling, etc.), can cook like no one’s business, has dipped his toes into woodworking, has recently gotten into golf more, and could 100% be a professional bowler if he were to pursue that. As of right now, though, he doesn’t like to read. While Josh and I have been reading The Bible and The Bible Recap together, as well as some devotionals over the past few years, he doesn’t read outside of that. These are the books I’d recommend if he ever wants to change that. ๐

Rec 1) The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
When we watch movies together, Josh often picks films set in the 20th century, gravitating more towards the 1940s through the 1960s. Being that The Outsiders is set in 1967, is a super short read at just under 200 pages according to my Kindle version, and is widely regarded as both an emotional page-turner and a classic, I think this would be the perfect read to get him into reading fiction. We recently picked up the DVD of the film while we were on vacation, so I can’t wait to watch that with him and try to talk him into reading the book. ๐
Rec 2) The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
If I could get my hubby to dip his toes into reading fiction with The Outsiders, I would then recommend another book-to-film adaptation he’s seen and loves: The Hunger Games! He knows how obsessed I am with this series (especially Sunrise on the Reaping!!!), so I think he’d give it a fair chance. Collins’s writing is accessible and addictive, so I could see him flying through all the books in the series if he were to give the first one a chance. Maybe then he wouldn’t be Team Gale anymore. XD
Rec 3) The Electrical Menagerie by Mollie E. Reeder
Josh also tends to pick fantasy/sci-fi movies from time to time, and he enjoyed The Greatest Showman when we watched it together. The Electrical Menagerie is a mishmash of both, as well as one of my all-time favorite books! The book also involves faith, chasing dreams, steampunk elements, and even includes a mystery, things I know will keep him turning pages. Plus, I need someone to discuss this book with, so I’d really love it if he actually picked this up someday!
Rec 4) The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
My husband also loves riddles and brain puzzles. The Inheritance Games is full of them, as well as intriguing mysteries, family drama, and short, engaging chapters, so I could see Josh flying through it. I have a feeling that, like me, he’d fall into the camp of his favorite Hawthorne brothers being Nash and Xander over Jameson and Grayson. XD
Rec 5) Dronefall by A.L. Buehrer
It’s been years since I read this Indie Christian dystopian/science fiction/action novel, but from what I remember, this book would be right up Josh’s alley. He watches a ton of action movies, and the premise of this book sounds like something he’d watch if it had a film adaptation. Dronefall follows a girl who is being followed by a government surveillance drone and ends up taking it down, which puts her life at risk. While I haven’t continued the series, I could see him binging it if he gave the first book a chance.
Talk to Me, Arrowheads!
So, those are the few books I would recommend to my husband if he wanted to try to get into reading, or if he liked to read. Some honorable mentions that didn’t make this list include A Walk to Remember (my favorite fiction book of all-time, just because I love it!) and, hear me out, the American Royals series by Katharine McGee, which is way out of his taste range, but I would love to see his reaction to reading about Daphne’s crazy drama. XD
If you have a significant other who’s not a reader, or someone in your life who you would love to influence to become a reader, which books would you recommend them? Let me know in the comments!
Aim high, stay strong, and always hit your mark.
