Helloooooooo Arrowheads! Today’s Flash Fiction story started out as a creative writing journal entry, and has since inspired plot ideas for a standalone novel which I’m thinking of calling Tales of an Awkward Turtle. So, let’s meet Brandon Andrews in “The Journal”, as narrated by his younger brother, Aiden!
The Journal
He found the journal on the train, and he won’t shut up about it. My brother–Brandon–who’s usually quite the opposite of a chatterbox is driving me bonkers because he found Jessa’s journal on the train our Youth Group took on our mountain trip. Brandon’s had an obsessive crush on Jessa ever since we started going to Victory Baptist in Corley Creek… and in the midst of diary entries about God’s grace and school, it looks like Jessa returns his feelings.
“Aiden! Aiden, look! On June 3rd, she wrote that she thought it was adorable when I tripped down the church steps as I was smiling at her!”
My brother’s pathetic.
“That was totally adorbs, Bran Muffin. You landed that faceplant like a true Olympian.”
“Shut up,” Brandon scoffs, turning back to Jessa’s journal. “And on July 9th–“
“So, are you gonna return that thing anytime soon?”
Brandon snickers as he flips another pink-inked page. “Why would I do that?”
“Well,” I drawl, pulling an idea from my butt to end the madness, “I was talking to Victoria, and she said Jessa’s been going crazy looking for that thing. I wouldn’t blame her for wanting it back, dude. I mean, she probably doesn’t want random creeps like you reading it.”
The journal flops to a close, my brother’s eyes bulging with fear. “Holy crap… but I did read it. How am I going to give it back to her with a straight face now?”
Ha, I’ve struck his social paranoia. That’s always a winner.
I yawn, forcing myself up from the couch I’ve been laying on. “Good luck. You’re about as inconspicuous as a fox in a henhouse.”
As I walk to my room, I suppress a laugh when I hear the journal slam onto the kitchen counter and an awkward turtle mumble, “darn this goldmine of information!”

Thanks for reading! I hope y’all love Brandon and Aiden as much as I love writing about them; they’re two of my favorite characters to write about!

Oh dear, it looks like Brandon has gotten himself into quite the pickle. Also…you do Flash Fiction Fridays too?!!?!?

Brandon’s always getting into some kind of awkward situation! 🙂 When I first started this blog, I used to do Flash Fiction Fridays every week, as I had a backlog of stories to post. I’ve since switched to book reviews on Fridays and focus more on working on my novels rather than flash fiction. 🙂

Ahhh. I used to do Flash fics every Friday too, but now I do them every other Friday. I haven’t been posting this month though because my imagination is kinda dry. Finny enough, it happened last July too, but I still posted flash fics.
